The levy - why it's time for a change

From 1 July 2017, The New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS), National Rural Fire Authority (NRFA) and 38 rural fire authorities (RFAs) will amalgamate to become one organisation – Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

The creation of FENZ will allow for a more coordinated fire and emergency service across New Zealand.

Bringing 626 operational units and about 14,000 firefighters and support staff together is not a simple or quick task. However, the end result will be a unified fire service that can adapt as the risks and needs across our communities change.

To maintain the current level of services provided, and establish FENZ over the next four years, the Board of the New Zealand Fire Service Commission is proposing to increase the rates of levy on fire insurance contracts for the 2017/18 financial year.

The New Zealand Fire Service Commission has now finished consulting on the rates of levy on fire insurance contracts and on Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s (FENZ’s) proposed activities for the 2017/18 financial year.
